Biotechnology Project
Introduction (Packet pages)
Biotechnology is rapidly growing biological science. Recently science and technology has developed methods of reading, cutting, moving and changing the genetic code of experimental organisms. Since every living thing shares the same genetic basis for heredity (DNA) these instructions can be moved from one organism to another creating a "new" recombination form of the original organism. This technique is now often used in agriculture (Crops and Livestock) The medical community is excited about the possibility of repairing defective disease causing genes in humans. This technology is called gene therapy. Bad guys beware! DNA fingerprinting is a technology that can "place" a bad guy at the scene of a crime using tissue or blood left at the scene. This project will allow you the opportunity to explore the science and ethics associated with the field of biotechnology. |
